GIVE US BACK OUR FONZIES

You’re in Calabria (yes, Spaghetty is on the road, don’t worry, we’ll be back to stir up trouble soon). You walk into a supermarket—one of those places that smells like families and home cooking (the ready-made section here is tiny, no offense to Milan’s Esselunga). You’re about to head out on a boat for a "meeting" (forgive the line, but it sounded cool), and there they are: FONZIES.
Now, of course, you might wonder why, amidst all those shelves, the fruit that actually smells like fruit, the brightly colored vegetables, and especially the cured meats dripping with oil, you decide to grab a bag of Fonzies. Maybe you aren’t even asking yourselves that, but we’re going to answer anyway: those corn puffs are comfort food—the kind that takes you straight back to your teenage years.

THE FIRST BLOW TO THE STOMACH

And that’s when the first blow hits: stars. Have you seen them yet? Could someone explain what they’re trying to do here? In fact, can the people at Fonzies explain it to us?
Being the dutiful children of marketing we are, we decide to buy them. We buy the limited edition star-shaped Fonzies because you can’t go on a boat without snacks, and Fonzies are synonymous with pure pleasure. Or at least, that’s what we thought.
So there we are, out at sea, 3 PM, along the Calabrian coast, under a blistering 104°F sun (yes, we got a nice case of heatstroke). The fateful moment arrives: popping open the bag.

HERE COME THE PROBLEMS

The little stars are actually fine at first glance. The shape is cute and matches the packaging image—you look at the bag and find reality inside, no tricks. Remember those gorgeous snacks on the box that looked like nothing on the inside? Here, the image actually matches reality.
Now come the real issues (because otherwise, we wouldn't be here talking about it). Let’s start with the flavor, which is the most painful part. The taste fully aligns with the idea of the original, but it lacks intensity because every bite is mostly air. Every bite loses substance.
As for the texture: complete failure. The best part of the original Fonzies was that crunchy tip—arguably one of the finest parts of the entire snack.

THE FEELING

The feeling, unfortunately, is like holding the original bag while eating a knockoff. And let's be clear: no multinational wants to attach its brand to something that feels fake.
Instead of just tearing it apart, though, we’d like to question the people who developed the product. What we’re trying to do is understand, observe, and analyze. So our question to you is: What is the strategy behind these little stars? What did we miss here? Is the goal to attract younger generations who, constantly stimulated by social media, require equally intense gimmicks from global brands? We’re ready to listen and change our minds.

WHAT IF WE DON'T ALWAYS NEED TO CHANGE THINGS?

We often try to tweak something that is already perfect, driven by the desire for novelty, the pressure to innovate, and the urge to recreate that initial "wow" factor. But then we end up with products that look familiar on the outside yet completely shatter our taste expectations—as if our memories are fighting against this new reality. Have you ever tried a childhood snack as an adult? What was your reaction?
Our thought (and again, just our perspective, not absolute truth) is that making changes doesn't always add value. Sometimes, we should just respect the uniqueness and history right in front of us.
Now, onto the main point:

IF YOU DON'T LICK YOUR FINGERS, YOU ONLY ENJOY HALF OF IT

With the originals, eating them and then licking your fingers completed the experience, making the whole thing magical. With these new ones, YOU ONLY ENJOY IT WHEN LICKING YOUR FINGERS. (Too bad you’re supposed to enjoy eating them, too.)
The recipe doesn't seem to have changed, but the way you bite into it has—and with that, a myth of our childhood has changed.

Fonzies

We look forward to your feedback. And no hard feelings: you’re still one of our favorite snacks, and we’ll keep eating you in the original format.
